In the spirit of growing old gracefully, America is finding that many of its elders are
living longer, healthier lives. In 1900, life expectancy in the United States averaged 43
years. In 1988, it was 71 for men and 78 for women. As of year 2000, half of the
elderly population is estimated at 75 years or older. Elderly women now outnumber
elderly men three to two. This disparity is even higher at age 85 and older, when
there are only 40 men for every 100 women. The ratio of elderly persons to persons
of working age has grown from seven elderly per 100 person’s age, 18 to 64, in 1900,
to 19 per 100 today. By 2010, there are expected to be 22 elderly persons per 100
working–age and by 2050, 38 per 100. As a result of this trend, there is a great
demand on services to meet the growing needs of our aging population.
The number of citizens in the United States age 55 and older is rapidly increasing. A
recent needs assessment conducted in cities across the United States has indicated
the overall quality of life for elderly citizens can be improved by promoting social
activity; increasing, extended contact with elderly living alone; creating “one-stop”
resource centers for the elderly; supporting family caregivers, and helping the elderly,
especially women, access professional advice as they face major decisions.
The Americas Basketball International (ABI) and its 501-3(c) non-profit organization,
Slam, embarked on an exciting initiative which will affect the overall quality of life in the
City of Birmingham, Alabama as well as the Southeast and Southwestern areas of the
United States of America. The ABI Slam Foundation's Senior Life & Youth Program
will perform a much needed community service for the population of older adults and
youth throughout the City of Birmingham.
This proposal requests a charitable contribution for personnel and non-personnel
components of the Senior Life & Youth Program. The charitable funds will be an
essential and primary part of this program, and, will enable us to provide services for
approximately 200 older adults and youth in the City of Birmingham.
The mission of the Senior Life & Youth Program is to provide services where mature
members of our community can meet together to pursue mutual interests, receive
educational, health, and nutritional services, and participate in social and recreational
activities which support their independence and encourage their continued community
involvement.
