Talks between the former FIBA Americas president and Commissioner Toney about
forming a team from the Dominican Republic to play in March and April of 2010 and to
compete in the 2010 Freewill Games, which would be played in June 2010, is currently
underway. Commissioner Toney stated that if they (Dominican Republic) do compete
in the summer games, that would increase the number of international teams
competing to 12.
DECEMBER 16, 2009
Commissioner Toney, Captain Carlos Garcia, and Miguel A. Sanchiz, Jr., President of
the Panama Basketball Federation, have agreed to terms in which the Panama
Basketball Federation will play in the ABI this season. Navieros de Colon, the
Champions of the Panama Basketball League, will compete against the Gladiators, the
Wolf Pack, Shoclem of Argentina, and Institución Deportiva Guruyu Waston of
Uruguay in the ABI Tip-Off Classic on January 1-2, 2010 in Birmingham, Alabama. Part
of the agreement with Panama is that the ABI will send a team of their choosing to play
in Panama on January 15th, 16th, and 17th against Navieros de Colon. El Salvador
and Argentina will compete at the end of January and continue into the first week of
February. The ABI will then head to Uruguay to play stage two of the league.
